Eat For Health

Eat for health

To increase energy...eat whole grains
Rich in complex carbohydrates, whole grains keep energy levels stable because they are absorbed slowly by the body. They are also high in fibre, which provides your body with a steady stream of energy through the day.

To reduce stress...drink skim milk
The old-fashioned remedy of a glass of warm milk before bedtime actually works! Milk helps stabilise blood sugar, which in turn reduces anxiety. It also soothes tension, muscle spams and mood swings.

To boost the immune system...eat mushroom
According to Douglas Schar, Director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine in Washington,"Studies show that mushroom increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive." Shiitake and maitake are the best immunity boosters in the mushroom family.

To live longer...drink green tea
A study 40, 000 Japanese men and women showed that green tea drinkers lived longer. This could be a result of the high levels of antioxidants, which is believed to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and fight carcinogens that promote cancer, among others.

To improve memory...eat blueberries
Blueberries contain the antioxidant flavonoids, which have been found to protect against the deterioration of the brain. They prevent free radical damage and improve blood flow thus protecting and reversing age-related memory loss.

To get into the mood for love...go for bananas
They are rich in B vitamins which are thought to help the body produce sex hormones, and contain bufotenine, a compound that lifts mood, self-confidence and sex drive. Their phallic appearance is also supposed to be a visual stimulant!

To get that warm fuzzy feeling...have more avocado
Experts believe deficiencies in folate can cause symptoms of depression. Low levels of folate have been found to deepen depression while high levels prevent it. Get your dose of this essential B vitamin in avocado spinach and asparagus.

To lose weight...snack on almonds
A 2003 research found that obese people on an almond-enriched diet lost more weight and inches than those on a high carbohydrate diet. The high content of mono-saturated fats helps decrease appetite and prevents over-eating.

Want to feel better, slim down and live longer?
Perhaps you should visit the supermarket, not the pharmacy!
